Lesson: Macedonian Alphabet

Content: the lesson teaches the Macedonian alphabet in its historical context, presenting the controversy that fuels animosity about language issues and impacts the relations of the neighboring countries in the region. The cultures standard is addressed by examining products such as the alphabet and songs, the connections standard is addressed by learning about the history and current political controversies from distinctive viewpoints, and the comparisons standard is addressed through the questions that ask learners to compare cultures and viewpoints.

It also includes an interactive quiz. The communication standard is addressed in reference to preparing students to engage in conversation to provide information about themselves and obtain information about others.

Content: A two-day lesson introducing students to Google Earth and the sights of Macedonia as they plan a trip to Macedonia and present their plan to their peers, who then vote for the best proposed trip. An explanation of the standards addressed is included in the lesson.

Content: The lesson simulates finding one's way around the city of Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. Students are encouraged to explore different decision-making paths and to re-run the simulation as many times as they'd like. The communication standard is addressed through learning phrases (presented visually and with audio) that are useful when asking about and following directions; the cultures standard is addressed through gaining an understanding of the practices of the target culture on the topic of asking for and giving directions; and the communities standard is addressed in using the language beyond the school setting.

The communication standard is addressed through both understanding spoken word in the film as well as in discussions with peers; the cultures standard is addressed by exposure to the products, practices, and perspectives of the culture portrayed in the film; the connections standard is addressed through connections to history, geography, ethnicity, religiosity, and other aspects presented in the film; whereas the communities standard is addressed by discussing the films in a community of peers (outside of school) and using the language for life-long enjoyment of watching films in Macedonian.
